Jewel Family Bibles

This is a collection of four separate family Bibles belonging to various members of the William Jewel family of Montgomery County, Virginia. They were all in the possession of Winnie Jewel Shields at the time of her death. The original compilation was done in August 1995 from the original pages. Copies of the book (including copies of the original pages) can be found at the Virginia State Archives, the NSDAR Library in Washington DC, and the public library in Christiansburg VA.

While only one of the Bibles remains intact, all of the original pages are in the possession of James Jewel Geary, great-grandson of William Jewel.

  • Bible of Mary Winston Jewel Shields  - This Bible was in the possession of Mary Shields at the time of her death. It was a gift to her from her "Aunt Lucy" (Lucinda Nunley). Except for the original inscription at the front indicating that Lucinda Nunley presented the book to Winnie Jewel on 30 August 1932, the handwriting is that of Winnie Jewel Shields. The information was most probably compiled from that listed in the Bible records that follow. This is a very small Bible —— only 3¾" by 5¾" and about 2¼" deep.

  • Bible of Cora Winston Jewel  - This Bible was in the possession of Mary Winston Jewel Shields whose distinctive handwriting is represented by the last three entries on the page of marriages and births. Who made the original entries is unknown although they are the ancestors of Cora Winston Jewel. The original Bible was destroyed along with the title pages but the original pages with family information recorded are in the possession of James Jewel Geary, who was the nephew of Mary Shields and the executor of her estate.

  • Bible of Lucinda Nunley - This Bible was in the possession of Mary Winston Jewel Shields at the time of her death. It is believed to have belonged to her paternal aunt, Lucinda Jewel Nunley. The last entry under Deaths (Lucinda Nunley) is in the handwriting of Mary Winston Shields. The other entries are believed to be in the handwriting of Lucinda Jewel Miller Nunley. The title page has been lost.

  • Bible of Christina Jewel Shelor - This Bible was in the possession of Mary Winston Jewel Shields at the time of her death. The handwriting on the left hand side of the first page of Births is hers. The other entries were apparently made by her aunt, Christina Jewel Shelor, wife of Daniel Shelor. The original title page has been lost. The original Family Record pages are in the possession of James Jewel Geary.
