McLaughlin Family Genealogy

Amos McLaughlin

Amos McLaughlin, my gr-gr-grandfather, was born 24 March 1804 in New Boston, New Hampshire, the son of David McLaughlin and Lydia Ober McLaughlin. Amos married Sarah Holt on 1 February 1830 according to the Family Bible. Amos is listed in the census of Woodstock, Vermont from 1830 until 1860. By 1870, he has moved to Hartland, Vermont. Amos and Sarah had six children, four of whom died in childhood. Sarah died 13 November 1843.

Amos then married Livinia Wood, the daughter of Samuel Wood and Lucy Ayres, on 7 May 1850. They had three sons, including a set of twins. Amos died 11 Sept 1874 in Hartland. He died intestate.


From THE HISTORY OF WOODSTOCK, VT; By Henry Swan Dana  Boston, Massachusetts : Houghton Mifflin, c1889 p 275, 279;

....In 1832 the 3rd regiment of the 3rd brigade and 1st division of Vermont militia embraced three uniform companies, all in splendid order, namely, the Woodstock Artillery, commanded by Hosea Vaughn, Jr., the Woodstock Light Infantry, commanded by Amos McLaughlin.... Feb 11, 1832 Amos McLaughlin was elected Captain. After serving a little over a year McLaughlin received his discharge in May 1833. State of Vermont has no record of military service by Amos, Amos B. or Henry McLaughlin.

Amos, Sarah and some of their children are buried in Cushing Cemetery in Woodstock, Vermont. Livinia is buried in the Hartland Three Corners Cemetery in Hartland, Vermont.
