A few notes on the Miller Family relationships:

The information on this family was part of the Michael Browder website which is no longer available.

As stated on the main page, at this time, there is no indication of where Daniel Miller was born, or who his parents were. In the 1880 census, Daniel's son, Daniel Miller Jr., gave his father's birthplace as Virginia. His youngest daughter, Rhoda Miller Godby, gave her father's birthplace as England. These are the only indications of were Daniel Miller may have been born (standard census disclaimers apply). The year of Daniel's birth is based on his age given in his Revolutionary war pension declaration. His date of death comes from his pension file.

The name of Daniel's wife, Ann, is given in Montgomery County land records (1820 - 1839) and Pulaski County probate records (1845). There were two Daniel Millers in Wythe County land records (Daniel was in this county from it's formation in 1790 until at least 1801), one with a wife named Sarah and the other with a wife named Mary. I believe ''our'' Daniel was the one with the wife named Mary. This may indicate Daniel was married twice. So far, no marriage records for Daniel Miller with a wife of either name have been found.

Unfortunately, Daniel did not leave a will or any other known document naming his children, but it has been possible to reconstruct his family from various court records found in the Montgomery and Pulaski County courthouses, and tax records found in the Library of Virginia.

Pulaski Co, VA Chancery Book 1:53 (23 April 1847) records a case brought by Daniel Miler Sr.'s daughter, Mary (Miller) Muirhead and her husband, James Muirhead, concerning her father's estate. The court record includes the names Ann Miller, Alexander Miller, Daniel Miller, William Godby, Rhoda Godby, George Askins, Eliza Askins and James W. Muirhead. I believe this is a list of the names of Daniel Miller Sr.'s widow, Ann, and his children (or heirs of his children [in the case of Eliza Askins and James W. Muirhead, whose parents, Elizabeth (Miller) Muirhead and Joseph Muirhead were both deceased]). The court record also includes the names Sally Muirhead, Jacob Rhodes, Elizabeth Rhodes, Enoch Muirhead, George Muirhead, Polly Muirhead and Ruth Muirhead. These may be the names of the chiildren of Daniel Sr.'s daughter, Sarah Miller Muirhead, but this is unconfirmed. The heir's of Daniel Sr.'s son, James Miller, were not mentioned since the suit was brought against James Miller's executors, his sons William and Andrew (James died in 1845).

Alexander Miller is believed to be the eldest son of Daniel Miller. Both were listed on the 1800 Wythe Co, VA tax list. Daniel was enumerated in the 1810 Montgomery Co, VA census, while Alexander was still in Wythe County. In 1812, Daniel Miller bought 285 acres of land on New River in Montgomery County near Newbern (later to become Pulaski County). In 1816, Alexander also purchased land in Montgomery County adjoining that of his father. Alexander was also named in the probate records of his brother, James Miller (Pulaski Co, VA Will Book 1:60 and 1:147).

Daniel Miller sold 150 acres for $800 to a John Miller in 1829 (Montgomey Co, VA Deed Book K:362). In his Revolutionary war pension declaration, Daniel indicated that this land had been sold to his grandson. The 1824 -1826 Montgomery Co, VA tax lists include a John Miller who was identified on the lists as a son of Alexander's. Based on the marriage dates of Daniel Miller's other sons, and the birthdates of their children, it seems most likely that the grandson to whom Daniel sold land in 1829 was indeed the son of Alexander.

The birthdates given for Alexander and his wife, Alice, as well as Alice's maiden name, come from undocumented second hand sources. No marriage record has been found for Alexander and Alice, but based on the ages of their children, they must have been married about 1805.

James Miller was identified as a son of Daniel Sr. on early Montgomery County tax lists (1819, 1820 & 1822). His date of birth is approximate, based on early census records. James Miller was the ''curator'' of Daniel Sr.'s estate. The names of James Miller's children come from his will (Pulaski Co, VA Will Book 1:58).

Daniel Miller Jr. was also identified as a son of Daniel Sr. on the above mentioned tax lists. Daniel Miller Jr. was named (as Daniel Miller Junior) in probate records of James Miller's estate (Pulaski Co, VA Will Book 1:60 and 1:147). The names of Daniel Jr.'s children come from Montgomery County census records and from Montgomery Co, VA Deed Book V:392. The birth and death dates of Daniel Miller Jr. and his wife Mary Francis Miller come from the Bible record of their daughter, Mary Miller Gallion.

John Miller's date of birth is an educated guess based on the date of his marriage to Margaret Whitt (in 1824). Montgomery Co, VA Order Book 22:329 (Sept 1824) records: "Peggy Miller, wdow of John Miller deceased, came into court and refused to take upon herself the burden of adminstration of the estate of the said John Miller and on the motion of James Miller and Francis Godby who made oath and together with Hezekiah Whitt and Daniel Miller Sr. their securities entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of six hundred dollars conditioned as the law directs certificate is granted to the said James Miller and Francis Godby for obtaining letters of administration of the said John Miller deceased."

On 4 Mar 1820, Daniel Miller Sr. sold land to his son John (Montgomery Co, VA Deed Book G:409). Later Montgomery County deeds mention land belonging to John Miller deceased adjoining the lands of other Millers.

The marriage record of Mary Miller to James Muirhead names her father as Daniel Miller.

Daniel Miller provided security and witness for the marriage of Elizabeth Miller to Joseph Muirhead. In 1824, James Muirhead, orphan of Joseph Muirhead, was appointed a guardian (Montgomery Co, VA Order Book 22:333). It is believed James and his sister Eliza Muirhead Askins were named in the 1847 chancery case (Pulaski Co, VA Chancery Book 1:53) referenced above as their mother's heirs since Elizabeth Miller Muirhead was deceased at that time. The 1820 and 1830 Montgomery Co, VA census each list Elizabeth Muirhead with one male and one female of appropriate age in her household.

Daniel Miller also provided security and witness for the marriage of Sarah Miller to George Muirhead. When Sarah's husband, George Muirhead, died in 1817, the sale bill of his estate included the names Sally Muirhead, James Miller, Daniel Miller, John Miller, and Alexander Miller. Enoch and Polly Muirhead were named as orphans of George Muirhead when they were appointed a guardian in 1825 (Montgomery Co, VA Order Book 23:90). The 1820 Montgomery Co, VA census lists a Sarah Muirhead with two children in her household. The 1830 census lists a Sally Muirhead with four children in her household (see ref. to Pulaski Co, VA Chancery Book 1:53 above).

The marriage record of Rhoda Miller to William Godby names her father as Daniel Miller.
Daniel Miller, Jr. provided surety for Rhoda's marriage.
